In addition to journalists, teachers are a favorite target of Muslim militants. It's not unusual for two a week to be whacked in Algiers, and, as of mid-1996, some 700 schools had been razed by fire or sabotaged. Teachers are often murdered by guerrillas in front of their schoolchildren.
