05/05/95Islamic extremists kill five foreigners working at a pipe mill at an industrial zone in the Ghardaia region of northern Algeria. The victims were identified as two Frenchmen, a Canadian, a Brit and a Tunisian.
06/05/97President Liamine Zeroual's government is re-elected; the FIS is banned from participating in the polls.
08/20/55Algerian independence fighters launch their first armed offensive against French forces in eastern Algeria.
11/08/42U.S. and British forces land in North Africa.
12/19/91The first parliamentary elections ever held in Algeria are won by Muslim fundamentalists. The elections were nulled by the government, tossing Algeria into civil war.
