Albania - Getting Around

Albania used to have a low rate of crime . . . a long, long time ago. However, crimes against tourists (robbery, mugging and pickpocketing) are waiting to happen, especially on city streets after dark. Credit cards, personal checks and traveler's checks are rarely accepted in Albania. In addition, hotel accommodations outside Tirana are very limited, and even confirmed reservations are sometimes not honored. Transportation is rudimentary and, in a word, sucks. The roads are rubbish (where they exist), and if you want to be remotely comfortable you should hire a land cruiser. The infrastructure in the south is generally better than the north. Hotels are either upscale or cockroach motels. Most folks stay with the locals.
