In April 1997, the director of the Albanian army's chemistry unit, Colonel Asllan Bushati, appealed to some folks who unwittingly stole radioactive materials and lethal chemicals from four military bases to return the hazardous material, including cobalt and strontium, to the authorities. The bandits were also implored not to abandon the material in a field, as the radiation could enter the human food chain.
