Afghanistan - The Scoop

The Taliban is in control of the majority of the third-poorest country in the world, which is something like winning third prize at Rotarian bingo. It might cost more to get rid of it. Even though these religious students have the Koran down pat, they need to cram Politics for Beginners and Economics 101 if they want to get a degree in Political Correctness. Their down home Pakhtun brand of Islam is a little rough for the more sophisticated northern Tajiks, big-city dwellers, Uzbeks and the rest of the world. Their frontier justice has brought relief from two decades of warfare and oppression, but things are changing for the black-turbaned Talibs. The battle still rages back and forth in the north as Massoud defends his home turf from what he considers to be yet another foreign backed enemy.
