Jafar is a journo's dream. On the surface he is an Ismaeli who controlled Baghlan province and kept it safe from the turmoil that surrounded it. He's a former pizza delivery boy, Hell's Angel and rock-and-roll warlord who controlled the strategic and profitable region of Puli Khomri. His father brought him back and he became a general in his 20s. He could barely speak the local language. The Talibs kicked him out in August of 1998 and trashed his luxury compound. He was in town from his new base in London when DP was in Dushanbe. He's looking for a way to get back into things, no doubt, but we didn't notice any "warlord wanted" ads in the local paper. He used to control a private army of Kayanis who kept things nice and calm.
Sayed was famous for being a fan of Jon Bon Jovi, sex, drugs and rock and roll. In a region where you might think that the wheel is new invention his snappy interviews, interesting choice of '80s disco decor and pure love of the game made him the holy grail for rock-and-roll journos doing the Afghan thing.
His most famous attributed statement was when asked why he left New Jersey to return to Afghanistan and become a warlord: "Because I can fuck or kill anyone I want."
Ooooh kay.
