Afghanistan - Getting Sick

Even though things are settling down, medical care is not Afghanistan's strong point. Health care is available in the major cities through aid groups. Many prescription drugs and antibiotics (not opiates) can be bought over the counter. They will be old and dusty and we do not recommend self-medication. A traveler with a serious condition should seek help in Pakistan or Iran. Better yet, take the next flight home or to London. Expect that the most basic medical care is limited or nonexistent with war wounded and children getting priority treatment. Malaria (primarily the benign vivax form) is present below 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) between May and November in the southern area and falciparcium strain occurs in the warmer south. Chloroquine-resistant falciparcium has been reported. Rabies, tick-borne relapsing fever and cutaneous leishmaniasis are present.
