The Khyber Pass is still controlled by tribal chiefs who make a living by shipping drugs, shaving a few rupees from truck drivers and kidnapping folks that ply this historic route. Robbery, shootouts, murder, extortion and/or kidnapping are an everyday occurrence for the unwary, and it has only been the lack of foreigners that have kept this region out of the headlines.
